IN-VISIBLE SIGNPOST, a graphically perforated aluminium grating system, paired with a mirrored bollard element, that acts as an identifiable wayfinding marker, orienting to specific locations within the City of Prospect and beyond.

The unreadable graphic perforations on the ground, become recognizable on the central bollard’s reflection, from specific perspectives. Words and phrases direct users towards particular contextual features, buildings, and roads along Devonport Terrace. IN-VISIBLE SIGNPOST references Adelaide itself and other points of interest in the City of Prospect.

IN-VISIBLE SIGNPOST’s graphic text on the ground is displayed in anamorphic projection, a concept dating back to the Renaissance, in which a seemingly abstract picture resolves to clarity only when seen from a specific position.

In this case, standing in different locations on the circumference of the stencilled circle, orients the viewer towards each of these points of interest. Reinforcing the ideas of place and movement, these optical tricks reward the experience of walking along Devonport Terrace, drawing people into an immersive experience in their local public space. Pedestrians approaching IN-VISIBLE SIGNPOST are slowed down, experiencing a moment of pause, discovery, orientation, and journey.
